Has technology advanced to a point where there are more reliable methods? What are the obstacles to progress?
Hardly a month goes by without animal welfare erupting into the news. In what has long been a highly emotive and controversial subject, sharing views and ideas in a curious rather than confrontational way is often forgotten and few have the courage to speak in public. This month Greenspeak is fortunate to be able to offer you a rare chance to hear a range of opinions. Make up your own mind.
Side stepping the ethical arguments entirely, some will point to the ineffectiveness of traditional methods. A spokesperson for Europeans for Medical Progress Trust said "Animal tests are the weakest link in the safety testing of new drugs. It's time to compare them with other state-of-the-art methods of protecting public health and safety"
Those speaking in defence of medical research point to the many health care advances which they claim have depended on using animal testing, such as treatments for cancer, HIV, anti-depressants, polio.
