Permanent site for gypsies and travellers approved

3 August 2008

Brighton and Hove Green Councillor Bill Randall today spoke at a special cabinet member meeting held to consider how to meet the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers.

The meeting agreed that the preferred site for providing permanent accommodation is within the former BMX site off Wilson Avenue, East Brighton – part of which was previously used for land fill.

BillRandall2004Cllr Randall (left) said: “In principle, Greens support the proposal, but we have grave misgivings – there must be cast iron guarantees about de-contamination of the site.

“”The council must ensure that the site meets ‘suitable for use’ guidelines.

"Gypsies and travellers who suffer from health, housing and education inequalities must not be forced to live on an unsuitable site.

“I am also concerned that evidence gathered about other possible sites has not been made public.”
