Future planning proposals must be in tune with local needs say Green councillors
Convenor of the Green Group of councillors Cllr Keith Taylor has today responded to the news of the collapse of the King Alfred redevelopment proposals.
Cllr Taylor said: “The Green Party has mixed feelings about the collapse of the King Alfred redevelopment proposals.
We had concluded that the final proposals were a significant overdevelopment of the site, and voted against planning permission being given to the scheme last year.
“Nevertheless, we regret the city will not get the new sports centre it desperately needs nor the badly needed affordable housing that the scheme would have delivered.
“We are also disappointed not to get a landmark Gehry building or the many construction jobs that would have gone with it.
“Now it is back to the drawing board, we are hoping it will be third time lucky in devising an affordable sports centre scheme that doesnąt see a huge overdevelopment of a relatively constrained site.
“We will now work alongside councillors of other parties to review the King Alfredąs planning and development brief to identify how this site can be regenerated in tune with local needs and sensitivities in the face of the credit crunch.“
The Green Group also warned that the collapse of the plans was the work of the credit crunch, with every major public/private housing scheme in Brighton and Hove threatened.
