End private profit in the NHS say Brighton Greens

15 July 2008

Our NHS is not for sale

Brighton and Hove Green Party has called for private profit to be kicked out of local NHS services as the NHS celebrates its 60th birthday.

It warned that the NHS is being systematically dismantled and sold to large healthcare providers to run at a profit.

Cllr Sven Rufus, Green Party Health spokesperson, said: "Sixty years ago Bevan worked hard to bring together disparate providers into a nationalised health service.

"Sixty years on this Government is working hard to hand the NHS to private healthcare providers, effectively 'stuffing their mouths with gold', as Bevan himself would have said.

Cllr Ben Duncan, parliamentary candidate for Brighton Kemptown, added: "The Green Party is the only major party saying no to private profit from a service that should be run for the good of the patients, not the shareholders.

"It is time to say no to Labour's privatisation agenda and return to efficient and effective state run services that benefit local people."
