Binvelopes help Hanover and Elm Grove streets
9 June 2008
Hanover and Elm Grove Green councillors welcomed the Council's response to their request for an extension of the roll-out of binvelopes to three further streets in Hanover. The decision was confirmed at the Environment Cabinet Member meeting on 5th June when Cllr Georgia Wrighton presented a petition of 158 residents from the streets concerned.
Georgia (pictured left) requested that action be taken to rid the area of split bin bags and open refuse on the pavement and streets.
The decision followed an initial trial of the binvelope initiated by Green councillors in a Hanover street last year.
A recent evaluation of the trial resulted in a mainly positive reaction from the 54 residents who responded, indicating greater satisfaction with street cleanliness and a desire for the scheme to continue.
There were some concerns regarding residents who continue to use black bags, or leave binvelopes out on the street, however the overall feeling was positive.
Green councillors welcomed this as a step closer for all Hanover residents to be provided with a way of protecting their black bin bags from local wildlife and the resulting litter strewn all over the pavements and streets every year.
Cllr Georgia Wrighton said, "I'm delighted that residents in three further Hanover streets will benefit from binvelopes to help protect the cleanliness and environment of their street.
“Split bin bags and litter spread over narrow pavements is a problem in the area, with the resulting harmful effect on quality of life, amenity, health and safety.
“Finding an acceptable solution for Hanover is challenging because of the area's characteristics, densely packed housing arranged in narrow streets.
"Residents' involvement in the trial will be key towards establishing a
suitable approach for the whole area."
