Caroline Lucas Brighton's Green Euro-MP has warned that Sussex University as a centre of academic excellence is under threat.

Government-led privatisation plans were considered this week by the university's ruling senate.

Dr Lucas (pictured left on campus), is the Greens' prospective parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion.

She said the plans would turn Sussex from a thriving university into a market-driven facility, less focused on its current strengths.

Dr Lucas wrote to all members of the university senate before its crucial meeting, urging them to reject the proposals.

The MEP said: “If they agree to restructure the way Sussex is run in line with Government's pro-business agenda, Sussex’s Senate has called into question the future of the University as we know it.”

“The plan, being proposed just five short years since the last management shake up, is financially risky, has not been properly discussed with either staff, students, or the unions representing them.

"It poses a threat to both public provision of higher education and academic freedom.”

The Senate meeting said the University “should aim to develop a Strategic Plan that genuinely builds on the existing strengths and character of Sussex.”

It will reconvene next month to further consider the proposals.

Speaking as nearly 400 students gathered outside the Senate meeting to demonstrate against the plans, Dr Lucas added: “Higher Education should not be about profit.

"Rather, it should be about extending human knowledge by engaging in study and research.”

“We can be proud of the role Sussex University has played in this country's academic heritage.

"We won't be able to say that in a generation if the University fails to build on its strengths as a critical institution.”
