Brighton and Hove Green Party have retained their city council seat in Regency Ward with an overwhelming majority and a swing of more than 3% from the Tories to the Greens.

Internet consultant Jason Kitcat romped home with a massive 41.6% of the vote, beating the Tories and Labour who polled just 22% and 20.9% respectively.

A jubilant Jason Kitcat said, “I'm delighted by this result. It's brilliant news for the Greens and fantastic news for the people of Regency Ward, Brighton's central district.

"I'd like to thank all those who worked so hard in this campaign and particularly the people of Regency Ward who have placed their trust in me, and I will work unstintingly on their behalf.

“A great deal hinged on the Greens retaining this seat. A lot of people were concerned that, had we not done so, the Tories would have held a majority on the Council, giving them free rein to make swinging cuts in vital services.

"The message from local voters is clear – they have told us in no uncertain terms that they want a party that is decent, honest and fair, and one that works hard for them.

“Sven Rufus and Hermione Roy have made tremendous inroads into bringing a breath of fresh air into local politics since the May election, and I feel honoured to have been chosen by the voters to carry on this work.

"This is just the beginning – I am determined to work hard to make the quality of life better, safer and greener for Regency Ward residents.

Voter numbers at last night’s by election were: Green Party 749; Conservatives 397; Labour 376; Lib-Dems 148; Independent 130.

The scale of the Green win in Regency suggests there is a growing likelihood of Brighton electing the country's first Green MP, in Brighton Pavilion Constituency, which includes Regency Ward.

Caroline Lucas is the local prospective parliamentary candidate for the Greens.
