Make city a transition town urge Greens

18 October 2007

Rachel Fryer
Green Councillor Rachel Fryer, who represents Queens' Park Ward will be presenting a motion to Full Council today calling for the Council to support Brighton & Hove as a Transition Town, seconded by Hanover and Elm Grove Councillor, Vicky Wakefield-Jarrett.

Transition Town is a national movement in which local communities come together to produce solutions to the challenges we face in the light of global warming and scarcity of energy and natural resouces. It will bring together the skills and creativity of all members of the community in order to build a sustainable future for the city.

Other towns and villages have Transition Town status including Lewes, Totnes and Forest Row. Brighton & Hove recently became a Transition Town, following a meeting in July which was attended by over 150 people.

Councillor Fryer said "many people want to help to create lasting solutions to the challenges which we face yet feel powerless to do so alone. Being a Transition Town empowers the citizens of Brighton & Hove to create positive solutions together. It is important to have the right people elected at the top who will make the right decisions for a sustainable future which is why I represent the Green Party. However, politicians cannot solve these challenges alone so it is essential to offer as much support as we can to people at the grass roots, harnessing all the skills of people in the local community so that we can work together.
