End parking misery for St Peter's & North Laine residents
15 August 2007

Green councillors are pleading for parking sanity in Central Brighton.
“In this city centre area there is parking anarchy, with double and even treble parking, corner and pavement parking – the roads are regularly blocked which will one day lead to blocking access for emergency vehicles,” said Green Convenor Cllr Keith Taylor, who represents the ward.
The area had been programmed for a residents' parking zone consultation, but this has been put on hold until at least 2013 (see previous ARGUS story, details below)
“Residents are desperate for an end to this parking misery. Even though 36% of Brighton & Hove households have no vehicle at all, compared to a regional average of 19%, the simple fact is too many cars are trying to park in this area – residents, shoppers and employees who commute into the town centre. I would like to see parking priority going to the people who live in the area.”
Notes to editors:
Previous Argus coverage http://archive.theargus.co.uk/2007/6/21/236675.htmlThe area initially proposed for parking consultation contains the Triangle, Round Hill and Viaduct Rise communities, and is bounded by Beaconsfield Road, Ditchling Rise, Viaduct Rd, Lewes Rd and Vogue Gyratory.
Letter to Alan McCarthy BHCC Chief Executive
Re Environment Committee September 13, 2007
Dear Alan
Under Procedural Rule 19.3 I would like the proposals in this letter included for discussion at the abovementioned meeting.
Following the delegation and petition to the Council meeting of July 12 concerning the parking problems in the Viaduct Rise area of St Peter’s & North Laine ward, I write in support of residents who are calling for a review of the arrangements for implementing controlled parking zones (CPZ).
Members may be aware that the December 2005 Environment Committee meeting agreed an implementation timetable which placed the Viaduct Rise area in joint second place in the programme, which at that time was estimated for completion in 2008. However, in November 2006 the Committee reprioritized the programme, which saw work in Viaduct Rise delayed until a 2013 start at the earliest.
In view of the continuing pressure for CPZs, and the fact that twelve months have elapsed since the timetable’s adoption, I would like to propose that the Committee requests the Director of the Environment bring an update of the CPZ timetable to its meeting of November 8, 2007.
I believe this update would provide clarity and enable members to take informed views as to current CPZ progress and future implementation.
Yours sincerely
Councillor Keith Taylor
