The Brighton and Hove Green Party, which doubled its strength on the council in the recent local elections, is staging contested ballots for the prospective parliamentary candidate slots in all three of the city's constituencies.

Demonstrating the increasing strength of the party, the line up of candidates will give the expanding local membership a genuine choice from a line up talented and experienced candidates.

The line up in each constituency is as follows:

Brighton Pavilion:

Dr Caroline Lucas, Green Party Euro-MP for the South East

Councillor Keith Taylor, Convenor of the Green Group of Councillors on Brighton and Hove City Council

Hove:

Ian Davey, Green councillor for the city council's St Peter's North Laine Ward

Liz Wakefield, a teacher and member of the party's Animal Rights Group

Brighton Kemp Town:

Ben Duncan, Green councillor for Queen's Park Ward

Phelim McCafferty, a trade union activist and the national party's lesbian gay bisexual & transgender (LGBT) communications coordinator

The party will be holding hustings 10th July and the results of the constituency ballots will be announced 17th July.

Acting party external communications coordinator Geoffrey Bowden said, "Our local election results in May showed the strength of the Brighton and Hove Green Party. Labour and the Tories cannot be in any doubt that we are a real threat to them now.

"The prize of our first MP for the Brighton Pavilion constituency is genuinely within our grasp. It is fitting then that our members will have a choice of two heavy weight politicians offering contrasting qualities.

"However, there is a growing sense that the party can make an impact in Hove and Brighton Kemp Town too, and in those constituencies members will have to choose between some equally strong candidates.

"Once the democratic process has been completed, the Green Party will be fielding the strongest team of prospective parliamentary candidates ever."
