Greens surge in end of year opinion poll

A national poll placed the Green Party at 5%, yesterday, pushing the party into direct competition with the Lib Dems, Tories and Labour.
The poll, conducted for the Independent newspaper, is one of a string of polls that has been showing rising support for the Green Party over the last 18 months.
Green Party Principal Speaker Siān Berry (pictured left) said, "People want real, practical solutions to climate change and a better quality of life.
"They know the Greens are the way to get that. That's why they're turning to us in ever increasing numbers. It's only a matter of time before we see the first Green MPs, and see the Greens really freshen up British politics."
Brighton and Hove Green city councillor Simon Williams added, "Such a surge in support nationally suggests that in Brighton and Hove the Greens are in pole position to win more seats on the city council in the May 2007 elections.
"A stronger Green prescence on the council will be good news for the people of our city. We are already the stongest Green voting area in the UK.
"It has led the way and now the rest of the country is following us and awakening to the relevance and urgency of Green politics."
