Recycling & Waste
We support an integrated plan that places much greater emphasis on reducing, re-using and recycling waste and that sees 'waste' as a resource, not as a problem.
The plan should reflect local needs and views rather than simply following central government blueprints. We need small-scale, people-centred plans that create jobs, not large 'technofix' solutions.
We support the adoption of ambitious, timetabled targets for waste reduction and recycling and believe that a wide ranging strategy can eliminate the need for an incinerator. To facilitate this, the council should introduce the comprehensive collection of sorted household waste in conjunction with Magpie and other community recycling initiatives.
We support information and education campaigns aimed at minimising the volume of waste generated, together with the development of community composting schemes.
We are opposed to plans for incineration as a means of waste disposal, wherever the plant is located. Incinerators produce dangerous emissions and toxic ash residues which threatens local peoples health and the environment. Furthermore, they undermine efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle wastes by creating a permanent market for waste and hence a need to produce it.
